Great oral health begins with the highest quality oral hygiene routine. We can help you establish a dental hygiene routine that will keep your teeth healthy and white, and your gums strong. Personal oral hygiene can be divided into three basic components: brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning. Dakota Dental Health Center is here for you every step of the way.
Brushing
If at all possible, brush your teeth after every meal. If not, then aim for at least two brushings per day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your hand and mouth. Divide your mouth into quadrants, and spend 30 seconds brushing each quadrant, for a total of two minutes of brushing time. Since most people are bad at estimating time, consider setting a timer or using an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.
If you cannot brush your teeth immediately following a meal or snack, thoroughly rinse your mouth with plain water. Also consider stimulating saliva production throughout the day by chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugar-free hard candy.
Flossing
Floss your teeth once per day with dental floss. If you’re not a flosser a plastic interdental cleaner, or a Waterpik may be used to help clean between your teeth. Work slowly and steadily, taking care not to make any sharp or sudden movements that could cut or irritate your gums. We are always happy to provide a demonstration if you are unsure exactly how to floss properly. Remember...You only have to floss the ones you want to keep:)
Professional Cleaning
Come to our office once every six months for a professional dental cleaning. This allows us to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing leave behind. If it has been a long time since your last cleaning, or if you are prone to gum disease, you might need a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. You might also need to come in every three months instead of six. We will thoroughly assess your teeth and gums and let you know what type and schedule of professional cleaning is right for you.
Keeping your mouth clean and healthy starts at home. It is a lifelong commitment that requires dedication and focus. However, it is also an inexpensive and easy way to reduce your chances of costly and painful dental treatments down the road. With a bit of hard work and a regular professional cleaning schedule, you can keep your mouth clean and free of disease. If you have any questions regarding dental hygiene, please feel free to ask. We are committed to your oral health.
